Don't hate me when I say this, but I think Big Bang needs to break up.
*runs and hides from the VIPs*
Haha, no, this has nothing to do with me liking Super Junior over Big Bang or anything of that sort. (And I am fully prepared for SUJu to break up any time, too.)
And hear me out, Big Bang breaking up could be the best career move for them yet.
I've been anticipating Big Bang's comeback ever since I started listening to their solo projects. Plus, they've been on hiatus for 2 years, an eon in Korean music industry terms.
However, their comeback left much to be desired.
Firstly, it was a mini-album - a grand total of 6 songs. And then, I found out that two of the songs are actually Korean re-recordings of their original Japanese material. Uhm, lazy much?
But still, this was Big Bang. I could be guaranteed of some great material from them, no?
It turns out that their mini-album kinda disappointed. It was good, it sounded like classic Big Bang, but something was missing. And I could not figure what was missing at first.
Then I watched their comeback on Inkigayo. They were awesome live, as usual, but I could see what they needed for them to make things right.
They needed to break up.
Sounds harsh, right?
Big Bang is a talented group of guys. They can sing, they can dance, they look good. They are beyond excellent performers and entertainers. They can write good, strong songs, they can produce great songs too. Everything they need to make it in the music industry as artistes, they've got it. And their fans will follow them, no matter where they go or what they do.
And it seems they have discovered who they are musically with their successful individual projects over the past year.
Here's where the problem lies. While Big Bang has a signature sound, individually, the boys' influences are distinct. With their comeback, each member tried to bring a bit of their individual styles into Big Bang. But it doesn't work - the Big Bang sound is no longer cohesive as it should be.
To me, that's as far as Big Bang can go. As a brand, as a band, Big Bang has reached it's peak. It's hard to keep trying to top yourself, right? Especially when your music is not evolving.
Big Bang and their music is getting stale and this is because the name Big Bang is keeping them in this mould that makes them churn out the same thing over and over again.
Especially in the Korean music industry where everything moves at breakneck speed, artistes need to constantly evolve to keep themselves fresh and relevant.
Big Bang is relevant, but no longer fresh. They are not maturing with their music. I'm not talking about 180-degree changes. I'm talking about growing with your music.
For example, Madonna. She doesn't change spectacularly for every new album. But she does tweak her sound every so little bit so that each new record is fresh and yet retains that classic Madonna sound.
And then Britney Spears. She has gone waaaay off the hot meter. It's cos she is stuck in 2004, during her Slave 4 U days. Her recent songs, Hold It Against Me, and that one written by Ke$ha, are alright and are signature Brit Brit, but they also sound circa 2004. Classic example of an artiste who is not growing with their music.
so. My conclusion - it is time to put Big Bang to rest.
Boys, Big Bang was your catalyst, but now it's your confine. You've got the chance to discover who are are musically. Move on and do bigger things - think further, aim farther.
